Ellisy Scores At The Buzzer To Lead No. 5 Men's Soccer Past Stockton

Montclair, NJ – The No. 5 and top-seeded Montclair State University men's soccer team clipped fourth-seeded Stockton University 2-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Semifinals on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Stockton had the first real chance, as a runner broke free of the defense in the attacking third in the 25th minute. They took a shot, but a sliding Red Hawk defender blocked it and went out for a corner. Montclair was able to clear the ensuing corner out harm-free.
  • The Ospreys had a golden try in the 27th minute, but SHANE KEENAN made an acrobatic save from in close to preserve the deadlock. In the 33rd minute, AMER LUKOVIC had his shot trickle in on goal for an easy stop from the Stockton goalkeeper.
  • Stockton broke through for the first marker of the contest in the 48th minute as a long ball was sent in from Aiden Hoenisch and eluded a pair of Montclair defenders. Joseph A. Carbone tracked it down, took two touches, and beat the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
  • Lukovic received a low through pass from SALEM ELLISY in the 54th minute, but the attempt was denied before the goalkeeper smothered the rebound. The Red Hawks found their equalizer in the 58th minute. Lukovic slipped a pass to OSBIN MENDEZ, who fired a low shot from a distance that beat a diving goalkeeper and tied the match at one.
  • With the game level, Montclair hunted for the go-ahead marker as Lukovic had two shots, and Mendez was denied. As time ticked away, REED KARSEN rang a shot off the crossbar, but the rebound landed at the feet of Ellisy. The rookie toe-poked the ball just enough that it got over the line goal line at the buzzer.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Red Hawks outshot the Ospreys 23-8, including a 17-4 margin in the second half.
  • Mendez's goal was his first of the season.
  • Lukovic has recorded a point in all but two contests this season.
  • Montclair notched their second come-from-behind win of the season, with the previous victory coming against Endicott on September 10.

FROM THE FIELD
"It means a lot. Coach put me on halftime, and I want to just do 100% to help the team out as much as I can but it wasn't just me the whole team came out on fire and we know what we're capable of and that's what we deserve for working on it." SALEM ELLISY on scoring the game-winning goal at the buzzer.

"We have to give our hats off to Stockton. They played a great game. They tried to sit in  deep and make it difficult for us. I'm proud of our guys. They never gave up, and they kept fighting to the very end, literally. We are onto the finals, and I think it's going to be a rematch against Rowan.." Head Coach Todd Tumelty.
