Williamsport, Pa. –
KUNGA TSERING hit a layup at the buzzer to lead the Montclair State University men's basketball team to an 89-87 triumph over Penn College on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Points were a plenty in the first half as the Red Hawks led 19-13 a mere 5:27 into the game as rookie AHMAD ROBERTSON hit a three-pointer. The host Wildcats tied the contest at 26, and neither side could grab control of the game.
- The Wildcats led 46-44 late in the first half, but AMIR WILLIAMS put back a miss from Robertson to send the two teams into the locker room level at 46. Tsering led the Red Hawks with 10 first-half markers as MIKE JACKSON pulled down eight rebounds.
- The Red Hawks stormed out of the gates in the second half, putting up the first seven points. Jackson converted a layup at 15:59, pushing the score to 61-54. A triple from AMARI MILLS extended the margin to eight before an 11-0 spurt gave Montclair their largest lead at 17.
- Penn College made a run, whittling the lead to six at 80-74 with 6:14 to play. Tsering stopped the rally with a triple, and Montclair led by six after a pair of free throws by KEYON PRYCE.
- After Penn got within one, Mills converted a fast-break layup with 15 seconds left to push the margin back to three. The hosts drilled a three with nine seconds left to tie things, with Montclair calling a timeout as they got in the front court. KIERAN FLANAGAN in-bounded and found Tsering under the hoop, and the transfer went up strong and hit the layup for the win.
