Women's Basketball Cruises Past Rutgers-Newark Behind 14 Three-Pointers

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University women's basketball team knocked down a season-high 14 three-pointers en route to an 88-43 triumph over Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair (3-4, 1-1 NJAC) notched the opening seven points, including five from ISABELLA ORLANDO, as they outscored Rutgers-Newark 15-2 over the first 5:26 of the opening period. KATIE STOVALL kick-started a 7-2 spurt to end the frame, as she hit a layup before draining a three-pointer.
  • Orlando knocked down three triples in the second stanza as the lead swelled to 26. Rutgers-Newark closed to within 18 at the end of the second quarter. Montclair shot 13-of-27 from the floor in the opening half, including six threes.
  • Montclair began the third with eight of the first 10 markers, with SHANNON HUGHES and Orlando connecting from deep. AMANDA CASTRO netted three straight points midway through the frame before ALEXIS STROLLO polished off the quarter with the final four markers.
  • The Red Hawks continued to launch from behind the arc in the fourth, as Strollo and LYNDSEY ROSS connected from long range. TIFFANY SOSA finished off the scoring for Montclair, knocking down a layup with 1:09 left.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The 14 triples were one off the school record of 15 set in 1995 against Rutgers-Newark and in 2020 against Rutgers-Camden.
  • Orlando and Hughes each hit four threes, as Castro and Ross added two.
  • OLIVIA VERO snared a team-high five rebounds while adding three blocked shots.
  • Orlando led the Red Hawks with 16 points in 18 minutes, with Hughes chipping in 14.

"Really happy with the effort tonight. I thought we played hard for 40 minutes did a good job against their zone defense. It was really nice to see some young players get going. We gave great effort and had a great shooting performance!" - Head Coach Karin Harvey.
