Ursinus Tops Women's Basketball In Mike Scala Classic Opener

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team fell to Ursinus 53-46 on Saturday afternoon on day one of the Mike Scala Memorial Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (5-7) battled the Bears early behind two three-point shots from ISABELLA ORLANDO, but Ursinus closed the first quarter on a 9-0 scoring run to make the margin 18-9 after 10 minutes.
  • Ursinus expanded their lead to double-digits with 6:15 remaining in the first half. Montclair responded with an 11-2 scoring run to cut the deficit to one with 1:45 on the clock. The Bears converted two baskets late to make the halftime score 28-23.
  • At the 2:54 mark of the third quarter, Montclair began to cut into a seven-point Ursinus advantage. TERESA WOLAK converted two layups, LYNDSEY ROSS tallied two free throws, and ALEXIS STROLLO hit a layup at the buzzer to give Montclair its first lead since the opening three minutes.
  • Wolak scored to open the fourth quarter and give the Red Hawks their largest lead of the game, but the visitors closed the contest on a 14-4 run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Orlando led the Red Hawks with 12 points. The sophomore has scored in double figures eight times this season.
  • Wolak tallied 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench, three off her season-high of 14 points on December 6 against William Paterson.
  • Montclair outscored Ursinus in bench points, 22-13.

"Tough day today for the Red hawks watching senior MEGAN DUFFY go out for the season. There was moments of gritty and tough play but weren't able to piece it together for 40 minutes. Looking forward to bouncing back tomorrow for another game against Albright." - Associate Head Coach Katie Sire.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks will host Albright on Sunday afternoon to tip-off day two of the Mike Scala Memorial Classic. Game time at the Panzer Athletic Center is slated for 12:00 pm.
