Women's Basketball Takes Down Albright In Mike Scala Memorial Classic Finale

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University women's basketball team defeated Albright 84-71 Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Mike Scala Memorial Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (6-7) battled early on with the Lions, as the two sides were level at nine with 4:19 remaining in the opening frame. Montclair used a barrage of three-point shots from ALEXIS STROLLO, MEGAN CAVOLI, and SHANNON HUGHES to close the quarter on a 12-2 scoring run.
  • Montclair opened up its first double-digit advantage with 8:07 left in the half on a three-point shot from GENEVIEVE FARA. Albright responded with a run of their own the next 90 seconds to cut the margin to 26-23.
  • Over the final five minutes of the first half, the Red Hawks built a 15-point lead off a 14-4 run that included six points from BRIANNA MONTAJES and five from AMANDA CASTRO
  • The home side reached its largest advantage of the contest at the 7:44 mark of the third on a fast-break layup from KENDALL HODGES. Albright trailed by double-digits for most of the third quarter before they were able to cut the margin to 58-49 going into the final 10 minutes.
  • Albright continued its push as it cut the deficit to four with just under eight minutes remaining. With 4:14 on the clock, the Lions came within two of the Red Hawks, who closed the contest with 16 of the last 21 points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hodges led the Red Hawks with a season-high 15 points, with Hughes added 14 on four three-point shots.
  • Montajes registered a career-high 13 points in 14 minutes off the bench.
  • 10 different Red Hawks scored in the contest, as the Red Hawks tallied 34 bench points.
  • Montclair shot nearly 48 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range, connecting on nine of 18. 
  • The Red Hawks held a 34-28 advantage in bench points and a 42-36 edge on the boards.

The Red Hawks will resume conference play and open their 2024 slate against Stockton University on Saturday, January 6. Tip-off from the Panzer Athletic Center is scheduled for 3 pm.
