Women's Basketball Clipped By William Paterson

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball staged a fourth-quarter rally but were ultimately topped by William Paterson 56-52 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Wednesday.

OLIVIA VERO led Montclair State (10-11, 7-7 NJAC) with a career-high 16 points in the setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks scored the four points before William Paterson countered with five of their own. The Pioneers opened up a 10-6 lead and held Montclair without a field goal for four minutes before TERESA WOLAK stopped the run with a jumper.
  • Wolak beat the buzzer at the end of the first, notching a layup from SHANNON HUGHES's long pass.
  • William Paterson netted the first six markers of the second quarter before ISABELLA ORLANDO got the Red Hawks on the board with a three-pointer. The Pioneers finished the second quarter with seven of the final eight points to open up an eight-point lead at halftime.
  • After shooting 6-for-11 in the first period, Montclair was limited to 1-of-11 in the second.
  • The Pioneers opened up a double-digit lead early in the third, starting with the first four points before NICKIE CARTER drained a three. Vero netted six straight points for Montclair State, but neither side could score a basket over the final 4:29.
  • Carter converted a layup 1:28 into the fourth to shrink the lead to five, but a shot clock-beating three-pointer by Brianna Smith pushed the gap back to 10.
  • The Red Hawks had one final push, using a 6-0 run to get back to two with 57 seconds left after a Carter triple. Montclair forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, but the three-pointer was awry and fell to Smith. She hit both free throws after drawing a foul, giving WPU the win.
