Men's Lacrosse Edged By Scranton In Overtime

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's lacrosse team was clipped by the University of Scranton 10-9 in non-conference action Saturday.

MIKE MCCREERY tallied two goals for Montclair State (1-1) as Christopher Crapanzano had two goals on 13 shots for Scranton (1-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks wasted no time as MIKE MCCREERY opened the scoring with an unassisted tally 17 seconds into the contest. The lead doubled at the 5:10 mark, with JACK CLEARY pumping in his second marker of the season.
  • Scranton tallied the final two markers of the opening period, including a Nick Donato tally with two seconds to go. The two sides traded markers in the second stanza, with JOE COVINO and LOUIS AZARA giving Montclair a 4-3 advantage.
  • The Royals answered with two of their own to take their first lead at 5-4 before TYLER MCCREERY leveled the contest at five entering the half.
  • Montclair held a 27-21 edge in shots, while Scranton was 11-of-12 in clears during the opening 30 minutes of play.
  • LIAM HORTON gave Montclair a slim 6-5 lead 3:51 into the third, with the Royals tying the game nearly two minutes later. The Red Hawks finished the period with two goals, including CARTER FINNEN's first career goal with 2:31 remaining.
  • After Scranton cut into the lead, MIKE MCCREERY re-established the two-goal margin off a feed from his brother Tyler. The Scranton defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, limiting Montclair to four and just one on frame. By comparison, Scranton notched 17 attempts in the same span.
  • Trailing 9-7, the Royals got a goal back thanks to an unassisted from Matt Solleder. Neither side could find the back of the net until a successful clear from Scranton with a minute left led to a shot from Crapanzano. His attempt was high, but a teammate scooped up the loose ball.
  • Joe Boyle sent the game to overtime with a goal with 22 ticks on the scoreboard before Boyle tallied the game-winner 29 seconds into the extra period.

FROM THE FIELD
"I'm proud of our guys today. It's not the outcome we wanted, but I'm proud of our effort. I'm proud of what they showed and showed what they can do. It's something to build on. We're not excited that it's an L on the board, but it's something we can build on with the with what we had because we're pretty banged up. Some guys are not able to play because of injuries and some guys got some opportunities and that's a good sign that going forward, we can be a little deeper and count on them." - Head Coach Matt Poskay
