Softball Sweeps John Jay Thanks To Ninth-Inning Walk-Off

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State softball routed John Jay 25-1 in the opener before rallying back to win 7-6 in nine innings Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bloodhounds got on the board first, scratching an unearned run across in the top of the first inning. The Red Hawks (14-4) stormed back with eight of their own in the opening at-bat. STEPHANIE SERETIS notched a two-run double before AMBER REED doubled in a run. KAYLEE DELOSSANTOS and ALYSSA BOROZAN notched consecutive RBI doubles, with LIZ MULLEN capping the scoring with an RBI single.
  • The scoring barrage continued in the second as JULIANA CASILLAS delivered a two-run double to left-center field. KAYLA COSENTINO lined a two-run single later in the inning, extending the lead to 12-1.
  • Montclair State added three in the third, as DYLAN BOLES, DelosSantos, and Borozan recorded RBI hits. The Red Hawks polished off the scoring in the fourth, adding nine runs on just hits. The team took advantage of eight walks and three hit-by-pitches to extend the gap.
  • For the second straight game, the Bloodhounds drew first blood by scoring once in the top of the first game. After a two-run single from Seretis gave Montclair a 2-1 lead, John Jay erupted for five tallies in the second.
  • Trailing 6-2, the Red Hawks could not solve the Bloodhounds pitcher until the fifth inning. Seretis made it a three-run deficit as she smacked a double to center, plating Mullen. Montclair State pulled even at six in the sixth after Cosentino lined a triple down the right-field line. The errant throw to third allowed the junior to cross home plate and tie the game.
  • The game went into extra innings, and NIKKI LUSNIA pitched out a second and third no-out jam in the eighth by getting two strikeouts and a groundout. The Bloodhounds threatened again in the ninth, but Lusnia fanned a hitter with two runners on.
  • Borozan was placed on second in the bottom of the ninth and moved to third on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt by Cosentino. Mullen hit a fly ball to center, and Borozan beat the throw home to give Montclair the sweep.
