Softball Tops Fitchburg State, Falls To King's

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Montclair State softball team split a pair of games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic Tuesday.
 
The Red Hawks (3-1) fell to King's College 4-2 in the opener before rebounding to top Fitchburg State 10-2
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. King's College)
  • Montclair manufactured the game's opening run in the top of the first, with ALYSSA BOROZAN leading off with a single. She moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced a base on a JENNA MELUSO sacrifice bunt. KAYLA COSENTINO stepped up and singled up the middle, bringing Borozan home.
  • The Monarchs evened the game in the home half of the first and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. The Red Hawks were able to tie the contest at two in the fourth, using a two-out rally. JULIANA CASILLAS singled LIZ MULLEN over to second, with Mullen scoring a batter later on a single from KAYLEE DELOSSANTOS.
  • King's regained the lead in the fourth, but Montclair threatened in the fifth. Meluso led off with a single, and pinch-runner NOELLE WOOD slid into second safely on a grounder from Cosentino. The rally stalled, as the Red Hawks could not push a run home.
  • The Monarchs doubled their advantage in the bottom of the stanza, and Montclair had one final attempt to tie the game in the seventh. Borozan dropped a single down the right-field line, and Meluso walked on four pitches. Cosentino lined out to first base before AMBER REED was retired on a sliding catch by the right-fielder to finish the game.

  • Borozan, Meluso, and Cosentino paced the Red Hawks with two hits.
  • ALI CAVALLARO struck out six in four innings in the setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Fitchburg State)
  • Playing as the home team, the Red Hawks erupted for four runs in the bottom of the first. Borozan doubled and moved to third on a Meluso single. After a walk to Cosentino loaded the bases, LIZ MULLEN doubled to left-center, plating two. STEPHANIE SERETIS followed up with an RBI groundout before Reed singled Mullen home.
  • The Red Hawks tacked on two runs in the second as Borozan, who walked to lead off the inning, scampered home on a wild pitch. JULIANA CASILLAS also drove in a run, bringing Mullen home with an RBI single to center.
  • The Falcons cut into the lead in the third, scoring two runs. Montclair padded the advantage in the bottom of the frame, with Borozan and Meluso delivering RBI knocks. DelosSantos capped off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth, singling Casillas home with a single through the left side.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (vs. Fitchburg State)
  • Mullen went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored as Borozan had two doubles.
  • NIKKI LUSNIA earned her first collegiate win in the circle, striking out eight in 4 2/3 innings.
UP NEXT
After a day off, the Red Hawks return to the field Thursday to face Rosemont at 9 am and Widener at 1 pm.
