Softball Edged by Rutgers-Camden in Doubleheader

Camden, NJ – The Montclair State softball team dropped a doubleheader to Rutgers-Camden in New Jersey Athletic Conference play Tuesday.
 
Montclair State (17-9, 3-5 NJAC) fell 5-2 and 6-3 to Rutgers-Camden (8-16, 5-3 NJAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks netted the first run of the game in the top of the first, as JENNA MELUSO reached on an error with two outs to score KAYLA COSENTINO. After two scoreless frames for Montclair, Rutgers-Camden tallied four runs in the third on consecutive two-run doubles.
  • The Scarlet Raptors added an additional run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-1 before the Red Hawks attempted a rally in the seventh.
  • ALYSSA BOROZAN led off with a single to center, and the team filled the bases on walks to LIZ MULLEN and STEPHANIE SERETIS. Meluso brought a run home with a fielder's choice, but a strikeout ended game one 5-2.
  • Montclair fell behind 2-0 in the second game, but NIKKI LUSNIA escaped further damage with a pair of strikeouts with runners on second and third. The team trimmed the deficit in half in the second, as MOLLY COLLIGAN recorded an RBI single.
  • The Red Hawks took a 3-2 lead in the third, as AMBER REED delivered an RBI double and Lusnia tallied a run-scoring groundout. Rutgers-Camden regained the advantage with two runs in the fourth and two insurance runs in the sixth.
  • Down to their final inning, the Red Hawks loaded the bases with two outs. They could not capitalize as a groundout to the pitcher ended the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Borozan went 3-for-4 with a stolen base in game one.
  • CHEYANNE WEIGAND tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and added a strikeout.
  • Reed batted 3-for-4 in game two, including two doubles and two runs scored.
UP NEXT
The Red Hawks host nationally-ranked Rowan University at the MSU Softball Stadium Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
