Softball Bested by Rowan in NJAC Action

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State softball team fell to nationally-ranked Rowan Sunday in both ends of a doubleheader.

Montclair State (17-11, 3-7 NJAC) fell 5-4 in eight innings and 8-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Profs tallied the first run in the third, scoring on the back end of a double steal as the lead runner was tagged out. The Red Hawks responded as KAYLA COSENTINO singled up the middle, bringing ALYSSA BOROZAN home in the third.
  • Rowan grabbed three tallies in the fourth before the Red Hawks cut into the deficit with pinch-runner NOELLE WOOD scooting home on a wild pitch.
  • Montclair pulled level in the seventh after runners were on the corners after a NIKKI LUSNIA single. A walk to AMBER REED loaded the bases, and JENNA MELUSO laced a single down the right-field line, scoring Lusnia and KAYLA COSENTINO.
  • Rowan snapped the tie with a run in the eighth, and Montclair had one final chance to tie. After JULIANA CASILLAS moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from MOLLY COLLIGAN, Rowan notched consecutive strikeouts to claim the win.
  • Game two was different, as Rowan took a 6-0 advantage after two innings. The lead swelled to eight in the fifth, and Emily McCutcheon took a perfect game bid into the bottom of the fifth. Meluso broke that with a two-out double to right field, and pinch hitter MADISON LEECH singled through the right side, breaking the shutout.
  • The Red Hawks tallied an additional run in the seventh, as Reed and Meluso registered back-to-back doubles, but could not get any closer.
