Wayne, NJ – The Montclair State softball team was topped in both ends of a doubleheader against William Paterson University on Tuesday.
The Red Hawks (17-13, 3-9 NJAC) fell 5-1 and 9-1 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the bottom of the second before the Red Hawks responded to level things in the third. KAYLA COSENTINO worked a five-pitch walk and, after an AMBER REED single, came all the way around to score on a fielding error.
- The Red Hawks loaded the bases in the fifth on an ALYSSA BOROZAN single and walks to JENNA MELUSO and Reed. They were unable to capitalize as a strikeout ended the frame. William Paterson pushed four runs across to take a 5-1 lead after six. Borozan and Cosentino reached base on hits in the seventh but could not get any closer.
- The hosts grabbed an early 1-0 edge in game two, scratching a run across on a wild pitch.
- Montclair answered in the third, as an RBI single from Meluso plated MADISON LEECH. The Pioneers tacked on three runs in the third, two in the fifth, and three final tallies in the sixth to claim the victory.
