Seventh Inning Surge Leads Baseball Past NJCU

Jersey City, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning en route to a 16-8 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory over New Jersey City University Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (16-7, 3-4 NJAC) wasted no time scoring in their first at-bat of the game. RYAN MCKENNA and MILES FEASTER recorded doubles down the right field line, making it 1-0. The Gothic Knights answered back, leveling the game in the bottom of the first.
  • The score remained 1-1 until the sixth when the Red Hawks netted two runs. SAM ANGELO launched a long, solo home run that went over the foul pole in right to give Montclair a 2-1 advantage, and three batters later, MATT KALISKE delivered a double down the left field line. NJCU responded, grabbing a 4-3 lead with three tallies in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Montclair tied the game at four in the seventh without a hit, taking advantage of three walks and a hit by pitch. After an out, Kaliske gave Montclair the lead for good with a bases-clearing triple to right. After an RBI knock from ANTHONY GUARINO, REECE MALEK hammered a three-run home run to right, extending the margin to 11-4.
  • The Red Hawks added two runs in the ninth, with ZACH STEARNS notching a sacrifice fly and Guarino recording an RBI single. NJCU made it interesting, scoring three times in the home half of the ninth on a three-run homer, but MICHAEL TODARO registered the final two outs to close out the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Seven different Red Hawks had at least two hits, and every starter had at least one.
  • Malek and Kaliske drove in four runs apiece, with Malek hitting his first career home run.
  • MICHAEL TIMBERLAKE improved to 4-0 on the season, throwing two shutout innings out of the bullpen.
