Late Rally Falls Short As Men's Lacrosse Edged by Stockton

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's lacrosse team outscored Stockton University 8-3 in the fourth quarter but were clipped 16-15 in Coastal Lacrosse Conference action Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Ospreys opened the scoring 34 seconds into the contest before Montclair State (7-7, 1-3 CLC) responded with the following two markers. TYLER MCCREERY tied the game 18 seconds after the Stockton goal, and MATT DANCSECS gave Montclair a 2-1 lead.
  • Stockton bridged the first and second quarters with the next five tallies, with RYAN VIERBUCHEN halting the spurt. After another Osprey goal made it 7-3, Montclair scored three times in a span of 1:40. ETHAN MOUNIER, Dancsecs, and TYLER MCCREERY contributed goals during the rally, with JACK CLEARY picking up an assist.
  • The guests closed out the first half with three of the last four goals and took a 10-7 advantage into the break. The Ospreys held a 31-25 edge in shots over the first 30 minutes.
  • The Ospreys extended the lead to seven as they scored three times in the third and the opening marker of the fourth. Montclair went on a run, as LUCAS NOVACK began the spurt with a goal off a faceoff.
  • That goal kick-started a 5-0 run for Montclair, capped by a Mounier unassisted tally. The two sides traded the next three markers, and the Red Hawks got to within a pair as Cleary hooked up with Vierbuchen with 2:10 left. TYLER MCCREERY drew the Red Hawks to one off a feed from Dancsecs with 33 ticks left, but Montclair's final shot with 20 seconds left was denied.

  • Mounier matched TYLER MCCREERY with four goals, as Cleary and MIKE MCCREERY handed out two assists.

FROM THE FIELD
"We played well in spurts, and I'll give our guys credit; we showed grit and determination in the fourth quarter. That was the best quarter I've seen in a while, but we went scoreless in the third. I thought our defense really settled in after the first quarter and after the first couple of minutes of the third. It's a 60 minute game and we have to put the whole thing together. I told the guys, you give me the fourth quarter for the rest of the year we'll be okay. But we've got to find a way to do that for 60 minutes." – Head Coach Matt Poskay.
