Baseball Knocks Off William Paterson In NJAC Action

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State baseball scored all nine runs in the final four innings en route to a 9-2 triumph over William Paterson Thursday afternoon.

RYAN MCKENNA and REECE MALEK drove in two runs for Montclair State (18-9, 5-6 NJAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks fell behind in the first as William Paterson grabbed a 1-0 lead. JACK HAVESON escaped further damage as he got out of the frame with a 5-4-3 double-play. Montclair put two runners on in the home half of the first, but the guests ended the inning with a 6-4-3 double-play.
  • Neither side could do any damage until the fifth when Montclair took a 2-1 lead. ZACH STEARNS led with a single and moved to third on the double from Malek. The following hitter was McKenna, and he singled up the middle to bring Stearns and Malek around.
  • The Red Hawks extended the lead in the sixth, with JOE GISONDA seemingly hitting an inning ground ball to short. The ball eluded the fielder, allowing JASON MOORE to score. The Pioneers cut the deficit to one, pushing an unearned run across in the seventh.
  • Montclair tacked on five runs in the seventh, breaking the game open. With two runners on, pinch-hitter MATT KALISKE laced an RBI single into right-center field before Moore dunked a single into the center. Stearns drew a bases-loaded walk, and Malek capped off the inning with a two-run hit to centerfield.
  • ANTHONY GUARINO gunned out a runner trying to swipe second in the eighth, and SAM ANGELO polished off the scoring in the bottom of the stanza, drilling a solo home run to left-center. MICHAEL TIMBERLAKE finished the game in style, fanning the final hitter for the last out.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Malek went 3-for-4 as Angelo scored two runs.
  • McKenna, Angelo, and Moore each collected two hits.
  • Haveson recorded his first win of the season, striking out four. The Red Hawks' five pitchers combined for 11 punchouts over the nine innings.
FROM THE FIELD
"Thought our starting pitching was great today; credit to (Jack) Haveson for getting us five innings. Any time you can get 11 strikeouts from your pitching is a good day. Great game for REECE MALEK, contributing three hits." – Head Coach Dave Lorber.
