Softball Powers Past NJCU

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University softball team swept New Jersey City University in New Jersey Athletic Conference play Tuesday.
 
AMBER REED notched her 100th hit for Montclair State (19-15, 5-11 NJAC), who won 6-5 and 13-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • JENNA MELUSO got the Red Hawks on the board in the bottom of the first, delivering an RBI single to right field. Montclair State added to their lead in the third, with Reed inching closer to the century mark as she recorded a two-run double.
  • The Gothic Knights chipped into the lead in the fourth before Montclair erupted for three in their at-bat. ALYSSA BOROZAN doubled home JULIANA CASILLAS before scooting home on a wild pitch. STEPHANIE SERETIS finished the inning off with an RBI infield single.
  • NJCU didn't go away, putting up two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to make it a one-run game. SAGE RIZZI, who entered in the sixth, worked around a leadoff double in the seventh to close out the game one win.
  • Meluso again got the Red Hawks offense going, delivering a two-run double in the first of game two. The Red Hawks poured it on in the second, as KAYLA COSENTINO brought two runners home with a ribbie double. Reed got her 100th hit three batters later, a two-run double to center before LIZ MULLEN finished the inning with a run-scoring single.
  • The senior third baseman netted an RBI single in the third inning to make it 8-0 before NJCU tallied a pair in the top of the fourth. Montclair's bats did more damage in the fourth, tacking on five runs. Reed singled to lead off before Mullen and MOLLY COLLIGAN walked. MADISON LEECH singled a runner home, and Borozan drew a bases-loaded walk. Cosentino, Seretis, and Reed all delivered RBIs to cap off the inning.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Borozan went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in game one.
  • ALI CAVALLARO, CHEYANNE WEIGAND, and Rizzi combined for nine strikeouts in the opener.
  • Meluso went 4-for-4, and Reed was 3-for-3 in game two.
  • ALYSSA BUCK tossed a scoreless inning of relief to polish off the game two win.
UP NEXT
The Red Hawks close out the regular season Saturday as they host Stockton at 1 pm.
