Men's Lacrosse Downs Kean In Regular Season Finale

Union, NJ RYAN VIERBUCHEN scored six goals as the Montclair State men's lacrosse team secured a home playoff game with a 12-8 triumph over Kean Wednesday.

The Red Hawks (9-7, 2-3 Coastal Lacrosse Conference) earned the No. 4 seed and will host either Kean or the University of Mary Washington in the First Round Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kean opened the scoring and held Montclair scoreless over the first 5:14 before Vierbuchen leveled the game at one. The goal kick-started a 5-0 spurt, bridging the first and second periods. TYLER MCCREERY, JACKSON SIMONS, MATT DANCSECS, and ETHAN MOUNIER had tallies during the run.
  • Kean snapped the run with a goal with 1:02 left in the second, as Montclair took a 5-2 advantage into halftime.
  • Montclair began the third with three straight markers, as Vierbuchen netted the last two to complete his hat trick. Dancsecs and Vierbuchen scored 15 seconds apart early in the fourth, giving Montclair a 10-3 lead.
  • Kean didn't go away, tallying five markers over the next five minutes to cut the deficit to 10-8. A save by BRANDON SHEVINS and an AIDAN LONG caused turnover kept Kean at bay, and Vierbuchen snapped the scoreless drought with 3:07 left. The rookie polished off the scoring with 24 ticks left to preserve the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Vierbuchen set a new career-high with six goals, surpassing his previous best of five.
  • TYLER MCCREERY added a goal and six assists as Dancsecs scored three times.
  • ANDREA FIORENZA went 11-of-19 in the "X" and picked up a team-high eight ground balls.

FROM THE FIELD
"It was a nice win for us. I think our defense really set the tone early and let our offense get in their groove. From both ends, we played very well. I have to give our guys credit even when Kean went on their little run, we were able to adjust defensively and stop it, and then we were able to put a few in the net for ourselves to secure the win. We are looking forward to a home playoff game next week." – Head Coach Matt Poskay.
