Baseball Clipped by Kean In NJAC Tournament

Union, NJ – The third-seeded Montclair State baseball team was clipped by second-seeded Kean University 11-8 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament Sunday.

JOE GISONDA hit two home runs for Montclair (26-11) in the setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After walks to RYAN MCKENNA and SAM ANGELO to lead off the game, MATTEO PASCULLI came up two batters later and dropped a single down the right-field line, allowing McKenna to score. JASON MOORE was next and lofted a sacrifice fly to center, plating Angelo.
  • The lead grew to three in the second as Gisonda homered to left field on an 0-2 pitch. Kean responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame, with Pasculli delivering an RBI knock in the top of the third with a hit up the middle.
  • The Cougars took their first lead of the afternoon in the third, scoring four times on four hits to grab a 5-4 advantage after three. Gisonda once again was the catalyst, homering to right-center on the 10th pitch of his at-bat. The solo shot leveled the contest at five.
  • Montclair crept back in front in the fifth on a sac fly from Moore before Kean broke the game open with five runs in the fifth. Four consecutive singles pushed three scores across, with a wild pitch and sacrifice fly accounting for the final two runs.
  • The Red Hawks threatened in the sixth and seventh but saw both stanzas end on 4-6 double-plays to end both frames. Kean tacked an additional run in the seventh, taking an 11-6 lead into the eighth.
  • Montclair got within three as Gisonda led off with a single while ANTHONY GUARINO and McKenna walked. A wild pitch scored Gisonda while MILES FEASTER drew a bases-loaded walk. The Red Hawks loaded the bags in the ninth, but a strikeout with the go-ahead run at the plate closed the game out.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Gisonda had a career-high five hits, going 5-for-5 with three runs scored.
  • Guarino went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.
  • Pasculli and Moore joined Gisonda with two RBI.
