Reading, PA - The No. 17 Montclair State University women's soccer team defeated Alvernia 3-0 Friday afternoon to open their 2023 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (1-0) opened the scoring in the eighth minute, as EMMI DENOVELLIS weaved through defenders and sent a low shot into the left side of the net. Montclair nearly scored a minute prior as AILEEN CAHILL drilled the crossbar.
  • The Red Hawks' staunch defending held the hosts without a shot for nearly 60 minutes, and after peppering the Golden Wolves in the second stanza, broke through for two goals in the 15 minutes.
  • Montclair doubled its advantage in the 75th minute. Kimberley Campbell intercepted a pass from an Alvernia defender, sent a pass to just outside the box, and LAUREN ERNST elevated a shot into the back of the net.
  • MADELINE LESICA added the match's third goal in the 88th minute on a volley following a cross from NIKI DANZ

FROM THE FIELD
"It was a great way to start the season. I was happy with how we grinded that out. I think our depth and work rate overcame some of our nerves and sloppy execution." - Head Coach Patrick Naughter.
