Curci's Goal Leads No. 18 Women's Soccer Past Vassar, 1-0

Poughkeepsie, NY – Rookie GIANNA CURCI scored in the 41st minute to lead the No. 18 Montclair State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Vassar Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks outshot the Brewers 5-1 over the first 45 minutes, including the only two shots on goal. AILEEN CAHILL was denied in the 18th minute before Montclair made their next shot count. SAMANTHA GABRIELE made a great pass to Curci, who deposited the shot into the goal with 4:17 left in the opening period.
  • The defensive battle continued, as neither side had a shot on target over the first 15 minutes of the second stanza. MEAGAN O'CALLAHAN's 61st-minute try was stopped, and Montclair goalkeeper HALEY MARTIN was pressed into her first save a minute later.
  • The Brewers limited Montclair to no shots over the final 29:25 and had their chance to level the contest in the 80th minute. Martin denied Vassar's try off a corner kick, and the Red Hawks didn't surrender a shot for the remainder of the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Curci tallied her first collegiate goal in the victory, putting her only shot of the game in.
  • O'Callahan, Cahill, and SHANNON MULLINS had two shots.
  • Martin recorded two saves in goal to earn her fourth victory and second clean sheet of the season.
FROM THE FIELD
"It's a great road win against an excellent Vassar team. We defended it very well, had clutch goalkeeping, and scored one of the best goals of the year. I'm really proud of the effort of the group" – Head Coach Pat Naughter.
