No. 6 Men's Soccer Draws With Vassar

Montclair, NJ – The No. 6 Montclair State University men's soccer team drew with Vassar College 1-1 on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks applied pressure early, taking the first four shots, but couldn't find the target. ANDRE SHELTON saw his 15th-minute shot denied by the Vassar goalkeeper as goalkeeper BORIS DEL VALLE made his first save in the 29th minute.
  • Montclair nearly broke through with about 12 minutes left in the opening half, as a foul inside the 18-yard box negated an OWEN MURPHY goal. The Brewers got on the board in the 35th minute as a long cross from the right side of the field was headed in, giving Vassar the 1-0 lead.
  • The Red Hawks wasted little time leveling in the second half, needing 1:15. AMER LUKOVIC corralled a loose ball in the attacking third and dribbled around multiple defenders before sliding a low shot far post that eluded a diving goalkeeper.
  • Shelton's 49th-minute try was denied before IAN CHESNEY's header off a corner in the 62nd minute went over the bar. Del Valle came up with a denial in the 68th minute, but two Red Hawks attempts would not go.
  • Vassar was awarded a corner kick with just under 11 minutes left, but Del Valle snared the header off the cross. Montclair had one final shot with 13 seconds left, but the header by GENE CARLO ALTAMIRANO went wide.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lukovic recorded his team-leading ninth goal and remains one of the top goal-scorers in all of Division III.
  • Del Valle made four saves in the draw.
FROM THE FIELD
"I think it was good game today, I think Vassar is probably the best 2-2 team I've seen, I think they've had some quality performances and just been on the wrong side of things but I think the draw is a good result and we got to keep moving forward." Head Coach Todd Tumelty.
