Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5 Men's Soccer Clips Alvernia 2-1

Montclair, NJ – Junior AMER LUKOVIC scored once in each half as the No. 5 Montclair State University men's soccer team topped Alvernia 2-1 Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (6-0-1) scored on their fourth shot of the contest in the 14th minute. IAN CHESNEY delivered a long ball that glanced off the foot of a Golden Wolves defender, and Lukovic was there to corral it. The junior split the defense and weaved around the goalkeeper to give Montclair a 1-0 lead.
  • Lukovic nearly doubled the lead in the 19th minute, but the Alvernia goalkeeper stopped his try. OSBIN MENDEZ and Lukovic also registered shots on goal late in the period but could not double the advantage and led 1-0 at the half.
  • The Red Hawks held a 15-3 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes while adding a 5-1 margin in corner kicks.
  • The Alvernia keeper rejected ANDRE SHELTON twice before Montclair was reduced to 10 men in the 53rd minute on a red card. Three minutes later, Alvernia was awarded a penalty kick, and Ryan Cogill converted the kick to even things up at one.
  • The Golden Wolves were whistled for a foul about 30 yards from goal, and Lukovic stepped for the free-kick. He blasted the shot and tucked it inside the right post, making the score 2-1 Montclair.
  • Late in the game, SHANE KEENAN punched a ball out for a corner kick that was nearly about to hit the far post. The Alvernia goalkeeper pressed up as they hunted for the tying marker, but his shot with 1:05 left was high.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lukovic has tallied at least one goal in all seven games this season and has three multi-goal games. The junior has matched the previous school of seven consecutive games with a goal that was previously held by Mike Olla in 2015.
  • Shelton was second on the team with five shots.
  • Keenan notched his fourth victory of the season.
FROM THE FIELD
"It was a tough match; Alvernia's a pretty good team, and going down a man doesn't make it easy, so I'm glad that the guys fought through a little bit of adversity and onto the next one." – Head Coach Todd Tumelty.
