Volleyball Splits On Day One Of Cougar Clash

Dallas, Pa. – The Montclair State University volleyball team earned a split Friday, falling to New Paltz but rebounding for a five-set win over Wentworth Institute of Technology.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • RACHEL CURRAN slammed home a kill to tie the opening set against New Paltz at seven before a 6-2 Hawks spurt stretched their lead to four. An attack error by New Paltz shrunk the gap to one, but they embarked on a 6-0 run.
  • Montclair got as close as five on a kill from NADYA ACKERMANIAN, yet New Paltz took the final two markers to claim the opening frame.
  • New Paltz jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the second period, but a Curran kill pushed Montclair in front 8-7. The Hawks countered with seven consecutive tallies, and the margin stretched to five at 22-17.
  • The Hawks won in set two, and Montclair took a 6-3 edge in the final period on a kill by EMILY FERRI. Montclair clung to a two-point lead for most of the stanza, and a bad set from the Hawks brought up set point.
  • NP battled back, fending off three set points before the period stayed level at 25, 26, 27, and 28 before New Paltz earned the win with the last three markers.
  • The Red Hawks briefly led 1-0 in the opening set against Wentworth before the Bears took over. Montclair forced a tie at 21, but WIT tallied four of the final five points to claim the opening period.
  • The team never trailed in the second set, scoring nine of the opening 13 points. SKYE RAMSEY had three kills during the spurt as Curran added a pair. The Red Hawks pulled even as they finished the game with a 9-1 rally, punctuated with a Ramsey kill.
  • Montclair trailed 19-15 in the third, but consecutive ADDISON CASTLES aces and an unforced error leveled things at 19. Montclair couldn't take advantage as the Bears claimed the third set 25-20.
  • The Red Hawks broke the fourth frame open with an 11-1 spurt, with Ramsey putting down two kills. The Bears got within four, but LILY THOMAS' solo block on set point evened the match two sets each.
  • Montclair never surrendered the lead in the final stanza, jumping in front 7-3 on an ace from EMMA HATCHER. Wentworth attempted to claw back, but a Ramsey kill from EMILY CARCICH gave Montclair the crucial victory.

FROM THE FIELD
"Very proud of our effort today, especially in the match against Wentworth. We didn't have our best overall game against a solid New Paltz team. Without much time in between, we had to adjust to another solid team in Wentworth and battle ups and downs. The team settled and pushed through to force a 5th set, ultimately pulling out the win. Proud how the team stuck together for a solid all-around win." Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.
