Volleyball Sweeps Elmira, Misericordia

Curran, Ramsey Named To All-Tournament Team

Dallas, Pa. – SKYE RAMSEY and RACHEL CURRAN were named to the Cougar Clash All-Tournament Team as the Montclair State University volleyball team swept Elmira and Misericordia Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair never trailed against the Soaring Eagles in the opening period, leading 11-6 early. Elmira closed to within one, but LILY THOMAS and MIA CAPRIGLIONE pounded down three kills during a 10-1 spurt to break the game open. ZOEY HORN put away an EMILY CARCICH set, handing Montclair the win.
  • With Montclair clinging to a 9-8 lead, the Red Hawks tallied 11 consecutive markers with KATIE RODMAN serving. During the run, Rodman delivered four straight aces before an ace from EMMA HATCHER made it two games won for Montclair.
  • Eight of the opening 13 tallies went Montclair's way in the finale against Elmira. A double-block trimmed the deficit to 8-6, but Rodman punctuated a 6-0 run with back-to-back aces. Elmira got within two, but the Red Hawks claimed the final five points to complete the win.
  • Montclair took a 6-2 advantage in the opening period against Misericordia, but a service error pulled the Cougars to within one at 16-15.
  • Montclair embarked on a 5-1 rally, ending with a kill from Horn. The Red Hawks took set one thanks to a setting error by the hosts. A trio of unforced Misericordia errors allowed Montclair to construct a 10-6 advantage in the middle frame.
  • Curran slammed home a kill to stretch the gap to 24-20, but Misericordia fended off three set points before a service error clinched set two for the guests.
  • Misericordia grabbed a slim 13-10 lead in the final stanza, but a 6-1 Montclair run flipped the score back in favor of the Red Hawks. Misericordia made it 23-21 on a kill before Ramsey and Capriglione powered home kills off a Carcich set to make it 2-for-2 on the day.

FROM THE FIELD
"Excellent way to close out a solid 3-1 weekend. I am proud of this young team's growth, especially playing quality teams. I thought our serve-receive game was strong today, giving our setters options. This was a tough weekend of 4 strong matches in less than 24 hours. Great way to end the tournament, and we are looking forward to conference play this next week." – Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.
