Volleyball Falls To Kean In NJAC Opener

Montclair, NJ – In their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener, the Montclair State University volleyball team fell to Kean University in straight sets Tuesday evening.

RACHEL CURRAN paced the Red Hawks (8-5, 0-1 NJAC) with 11 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening period, but the Cougars' 13-2 spurt extended the lead to double-figures. The Red Hawks battled back, as seven points from the service line by GABBY KONRAD made it 17-14.
  • Kean answered with five straight and ended the first period with three of the final four points to claim set one.
  • The Cougars took a slim 8-6 edge in set two before a kill from SKYE RAMSEY inched Montclair back in front. Curran recorded a kill to make it 15-14, but Kean tilted the match with seven straight to grab a 20-15 edge.
  • Facing a 24-19 deficit, the Red Hawks used back-to-back aces from ADDISON CASTLES and a Curran kill to stave off four set points; however, a Taylor Micheaux kill ended set two in favor of Kean.
  • The guests took a 9-4 advantage in the final period, but three straight service aces from KATIE RODMAN shrunk the margin to 14-11. Montclair could only get as close as five the rest of the way, as Kean took the last two points to come away with the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • In addition to her three aces, Rodman picked up a team-high 11 digs.
  • EMILY CARCICH handed out 23 assists in the setback.
FROM THE COURT
"The atmosphere in Panzer tonight was electric. I commend all our student-athletes for coming out and supporting our program. It was great to set a new attendance record for volleyball and see the stands filled on both sides. I have to give credit to Kean; they played a solid all-around game. We couldn't attack them from the service line in hopes of slowing down their offense. They hit for a high percentage, and we couldn't get in rhythm. We will learn from this match and clean up a few areas to improve for the next conference match. We get to see some solid non-conference games this weekend, and we look to build from that for next week." – Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks head to Trinity (CT) for a tri-match on Saturday. They face Regis (MA) College at 2 pm before battling the host Bantams at 4 pm.
