Van Tassel Scores Twice As Field Hockey Blanks Gwynedd Mercy

Montclair, NJ – Senior CARLIE VAN TASSEL scored twice as the Montclair State University field hockey blanked Gwynedd Mercy 4-0 on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Red Hawks (1-1) broke through 1:44 into the second. GAB MAISTO inserted a corner to ALEXA ANTONELLI, who received the ball at the top of the circle. She took one dribble and rifled a shot that was deflected into the back of the goal by CARLIE VAN TASSEL, giving Montclair the 1-0 edge.
  • Montclair continued to pepper the Griffins goalkeeper with shots but could not convert tries from ALEXA ANTONELLI and JORDAN VANDERMARK. Gwynedd Mercy finally notched their first shot of the afternoon with nearly five minutes remaining in the second but was stopped by MCKENNA LAMAN.
  • The Red Hawks looked to stretch their lead to two in the third quarter and were finally rewarded on their eighth shot of the frame. Maisto inserted the ball off a corner to Antonelli, who fired an attempt that beat the goalkeeper stick side to double their advantage late in the period.
  • The corners again worked to the Red Hawks' advantage, as the team added a third marker in the fourth quarter. Maisto sent the first pass to SADIE EICHLIN, who ripped a shot that Van Tassel tipped home for her second goal of the game.
  • Three minutes later, Maisto scored her first of the contest, converting an opportunity through a scrum in front of the goal off a pass from KYLIE COMPTON. The Red Hawks nearly made it five, but the Griffins goalie stopped MARISSA CRAIG's try.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Van Tassel tallied the fourth multi-goal game of her career and the first since netting a pair against William Paterson on October 6, 2021.
