Field Hockey Takes Down FDU-Florham, 3-1

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team knocked off FDU-Florham in non-conference action Wednesday evening.

SAMI BLOOM, CARLY AMERMAN, and SADIE EICHLIN tallied goals for Montclair (4-4).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks controlled the opening few minutes and finally broke through in the 10th minute. Eichlin was denied on the doorstep by a Devils' defender off a corner, but the rebound came loose. Bloom was there and poked the ball in, giving Montclair the 1-0 edge.
  • Montclair outshot FDU 11-1 over the first minutes and got rewarded again off a corner. KELLY WESTERVELT inserted the ball to Amerman, who took two steps before rifling a shot past the FDU goalkeeper.
  • The Red Hawks notched a third goal 61 seconds later to make it 3-0 before halftime. Westervelt made a clean pass across the circle to Eichlin, who flipped a shot in the back of the goal. The staunch defense held FDU shot-less for the first 25:40 of the game.
  • The FDU keeper denied KASEY WATSON in the 33rd minute and HOLLY THORNBURG in the 36th before the Devils cut into the margin in the 40th minute. Megan Surgent, who passed in a corner pass, knocked in a rebound, making it 3-1 Montclair.
  • The Devils continued to hunt for the tying goals, but goalkeeper MCKENNA LAMAN preserved the win with two fourth-quarter saves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eichlin and Bloom each netted their first collegiate goals.
  • Westervelt tallied her first two points of the season and has two goals and two assists in two career games against FDU-Florham.
  • Laman made three saves to earn her fourth win of the year.
FROM THE FIELD
"I think our focus for this game was to have a stronger first half and come out with better intensity scoring first. We accomplished that, and now the focus moving forward will continue to be a full 60-minute game. Huge shout out to our offensive corner group; I think we capitalized on offensive corners a lot in the first half. Sadie scoring on a really special play; that lift is something we work on a lot, so I'm really happy for her. Shout out to Sami, awesome scoring her first college goal, first of many, and we're excited for the next one." – Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly.
