Volleyball Tripped Up By Ramapo

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision to Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (8-8, 0-2 NJAC) took a 5-1 lead early in the opening frame as EMILY CARCICH served up two straight aces. Two kills from RACHEL CURRAN and a kill from SHELLEY EATON pushed the gap to 10-6 before Ramapo battled back.
  • The Roadrunners notched 11 of 12 points late in the frame to turn a one-point deficit into an eight-point lead. Curran stopped a run with a kill, and a bad set from the Roadrunners fended off two set points before a kill ended set one.
  • Ramapo held an early lead in the second frame before Montclair clawed back to 15-13 on kills from Eaton, Curran, and ZOEY HORN. The Red Hawks could not get any closer than three the rest of the stanza as Ramapo took a 2-0 advantage.
  • A Horn ace extended the Montclair margin to 8-4 in the final stanza, with the Roadrunners battling back to gain a 17-14 lead. The Red Hawks reeled off the following four points on unforced errors to creep back in front by one.
  • The nip-and-tuck frame saw Ramapo erase a 22-20 deficit, and an attack error from Montclair brought up match point. The Red Hawks weren't done, as LILY THOMAS put away a kill, and an attack error evened things at 24. Ramapo quickly answered with the final two points to come away with the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Curran led Montclair with nine kills while picking up six digs.
  • Eaton, Thomas, and SKYE RAMSEY added four kills.
  • Carcich handed out 22 assists.
FROM THE COURT
"I thought we came out strong in the first set and played well. Unfortunately, our unforced errors put us in some deficits we couldn't overcome. I thought Ramapo played very well, with lots of energy, and did a good job on defense. We will need to shift gears and focus our attention on Rowan for Thursday." - Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks resume NJAC play on Thursday as they head to Glassboro, NJ, for a 7 pm showdown against Rowan.
