Volleyball Topped By NYU

New York, NY – The Montclair State University volleyball team suffered their first setback of the season, falling 3-0 to nationally-ranked NYU Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • NYU jumped out to a 7-3 advantage before KATIE RODMAN served up five straight points, including two aces, to push Montclair (3-1) in front. The period continued, and another Rodman ace extended the margin to three at 17-14 before the hosts battled back to tie it at 19.
  • Montclair forced ties at 20 and 21, but the Violets reeled off the final four markers to claim the first set.
  • An ace from GABBY KONRAD gave Montclair a 7-5 edge in the second stanza, but eight of the following nine markers favored NYU. The Red Hawks would get as close as five on a service error at 16-11, yet NYU finished off set two on a 9-3 spurt to go up 2-0.
  • The Violets raced out to a 5-1 lead in the final period, but two unforced errors got Montclair to within a pair at 5-3. A 10-2 run by NYU stretched the game to double-digits, and the hosts ended the match on a 4-0 rally to complete the sweep.
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RACHEL CURRAN paced Montclair with seven kills while adding seven digs.
  • EMILY CARCICH handed out 15 assists and narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs.
  • Rodman finished with four aces, one off of her career-high.
 FROM THE COURT
"I thought we did a great job in the first set on our side of the net. Our passing was there, and we kept moving the ball in our offense. Unfortunately, our pass broke down later in the set and continued for the sets after. From there, we didn't get in a flow. NYU is a solid team, and their experience showed at the end. We will learn from this match, especially that first set." – Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.
