Women's Soccer Edges New Paltz 3-2

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University women's soccer team took down New Paltz in non-conference action Wednesday.

MADELINE LESICA, AILEEN CAHILL, and KYLIE PRENDERGAST added goals for Montclair (2-1), as Kelly Licata and Brooke Kelleher notched markers for New Paltz (1-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks needed just 3:30 to get on the board. Cahill received a ball at midfield and sent a pass down the field to Prendergast. The sophomore took a touch and slid a pass across the box to Lesica, who deposited the ball into the back of the net.
  • The Hawks answered six minutes later, as Licata tallied an unassisted goal. The score remained the same for the next 20+ minutes before Montclair took the lead in the 33rd minute. JULIE BAKER corralled a pass on the right sideline and delivered a service. Cahill knocked it down and volleyed it in before it hit the ground, rifling a try past the keeper.
  • The Red Hawks held a 10-4 edge in shots after the first period and a 4-0 margin in corners.
  • New Paltz evened the game at two 8:02 into the half, putting their first of the frame on target. The Red Hawks fought back, needing 1:59 to pull back in front. MEAGAN O'CALLAHAN took a pass just inside the six-yard box and looped a pass to Prendergast. She buried the shot, putting Montclair back in front.
  • The visitors searched for the tying goal but were denied by Martin in the 78th minute. The Hawks were reduced to 10 in the 81st minute after a red card, and Montclair was able to run out the rest of the clock.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Montclair held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks and outshot New Paltz 19-7.
  • Lesica has scored a goal in three contests this season.
  • O'Callahan led Montclair with six shots and collected her first point of the year.
FROM THE FIELD
"Really happy with our effort. We knew they would be very good, very athletic, and make the game very difficult. I thought that they caused us a lot of problems defensively with their athleticism and their work rate. We're fortunate that we got three great goals from some really, really good players tonight. And ultimately, sometimes that's why you win because you have special kids and special kids do special things. I'm really happy that we got to win and onto the next one." Head Coach Pat Naughter.
