Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team fell to Kean 76-66 on Saturday afternoon at the Panzer Athletic Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Hawks (6-10, 3-6 NJAC) fell behind early as the Cougars struck for the first six points of the contest. The home side responded with back-to-back buckets from OLIVIA VERO and BRIANNA MONTAJES.
- After Kean took a 15-11 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter, KENDALL HODGES and Vero scored the final four points of the quarter to level the score after one.
- The Cougars took their largest lead of the first half with 4:33 remaining in the second quarter, going up 28-21. SHANNON HUGHES scored seven-straight points to tie the game, and eventually hit a three-point shot to give the Red Hawks the lead with just over two minutes on the clock.
- The three from Hughes was the beginning of a 7-0 run that Montclair rode into the half to go up by five.
- Montclair continued their run coming out of the break, as Montajes, Vero, and Hughes all scored on layups to open up a 11-point advantage.
- Kean responded with a 14-3 scoring run to retake the lead with 4:22 in the third quarter. The Red Hawks briefly retook the lead, but the Cougars closed the frame with 10 of the last 11 points.
- The Cougars grew their advantage to 12 with 5:21 remaining in the game and got it as high as 15 during the final stretch of the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Vero led the Red Hawks with 18 points to go along with eight boards. It marked her third game in double-figures this season.
- Montajes matched her career-high of 13 points and also tallied six assists and four rebounds. Hughes was the third Red Hawk in double-figures with 12 points.
