Muuss Breaks Four-Set Kill Record to Help Volleyball Take Down Stockton, 3-1

Galloway, NJ – First-year outside hitter CAMRYN MUUSS broke the school's four-set single-match kills record with 30 kills to help the Montclair State volleyball team (9-6, 1-1 NJAC) take down NJAC foe Stockton (10-3, 1-1 NJAC), 3-1 on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set started off with Stockton jumping off to a 4-1 lead, but Montclair fought but with an 8-1 run that included four kills from Muuss, two service aces from GABBY KONRAD, and a kill from LILY THOMAS to take a 9-5 lead. The rest of the way was spent with the Red Hawks holding off the Ospreys from generating any true run, with no runs happening of more than two points at a time and Montclair eventually took a 25-21 set-one victory. Down the stretch in the set after the first big run, Muuss knocked down four more kills, SARAH CAPONE, RACHEL CURRAN and Thomas each collected two kills, SOFIA DIPROFIO earned a kill and a block and KASEY TRZASKA notched a service ace.
  • Stockton started off strong again with three straight points, but let Montclair climb back with four unanswered points to take a 4-3 lead. After an Osprey's kill, the Red Hawks notched seven straight points for an 11-4 edge. That run was put together by two kills from Muuss, two service aces by KATIE RODMAN, and a kill apiece from Thomas, Capone and SOPHIA LOPEZ. After a 12-6 Red Hawk lead, the Ospreys were able to fight back with a big run of 12-2 to flip the script in their favor, 16-13. Both teams exchanged points up to a 20-16 Stockon lead when the Red Hawks turned the set back in their favor with six unanswered on three kills from Capone, two service aces from Rodman and a kill from Muuss. Montclair had match point at a 24-21 lead and while Stockton took two points to try and force the win-by-two rule, Muuss hammered down the set-point kill to give the Red Hawks the set two win, 25-23.
  • It was the Red Hawks who jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage that included kills from Muuss, Curran and Thomas along with another service ace from Rodman. Both teams fought back-and-forth to a 9-6 Montclair lead before Stockton took over with a 10-2 run that made the score, 16-11. The Ospreys never let the Red Hawks generate a comeback run and they eventually held off to avoid the sweep, 25-17.
  • Set four started as a back-and-forth contest with the Ospreys holding a bit of the advantage up to a 9-6 lead. After that, the Red Hawks went on a 5-1 run to take their first lead of the set, 11-10. That run was sparked by kills from Muuss, Lopez and Capone and a service ace from EMMA HATCHER. Stockton eventually held a 15-13 edge, but Montclair fought back again with a 7-1 run that included three kills from Muuss, two kills from Curran and one from Capone to take a 20-16 advantage. The Ospreys nodded the contest up at 20-20 with four straight points, heading into the final push. Both teams exchanged points before Lopez knocked down to kills, followed by a kill from Muus to set up match point at 24-21.
