Montclair, NJ– The Montclair State football team (2-3, 0-2 NJAC) suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Kean (2-3, 2-0 NJAC), 16-13 on Saturday night at Sprague Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars received the ball first and the first play of the day was a big one as they ripped off a 75-yard return to the Montclair 23 and a personal foul at the end of the play gave them the ball at the 11-yard line. It only took one offensive play too for Kean score as they threw to a wide open running back in the flat for the 11-yard touchdown and took a 7-0 lead early.
- After a pair of punting drives, the Red Hawks started their second drive at the Kean 46 and put themselves on their 21 on a 5-yard connection from AIDAN MCLAUGHLIN to ANTHONY ROIGE, a 16-yard strike to MAKAI MICKENS and a four-yard run from McLaughlin. The drive was halted however on an interception and Kean took over at their 29 with 7:07 left to go in the first quarter.
- Kean punted it back to Montclair, but once again an interception stalled a scoring chance for the Red Hawks and the Cougars took over at the Montclair 19 where it only took them only one pass to the endzone to score and give themselves a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
- Montclair was moving the ball again and put together a good drive that went into the second quarter. JIMMY PEPE scampered for some good runs of seven and eight yards and a pass interference on a ball that was intended for JAMIE HAMILTON set them up just outside the redzone at the 26. The drive went in the wrong direction however when McLaughlin was sacked for an 11-yard loss. Faced with a third and 20, a pass was completed to Roige for 16 yards and set the Red Hawks up with a fourth and four, but were unable to convert and once again Kean came up with a stop.
- A bobbled snap on a Cougars punt and a rush attempt by the punter was swallowed up by BI'SHAY SANDERS to give the Red Hawks excellent field position at the Kean 26. It only took four plays to score and it was punched in by McLaughlin to cut the lead to 14-7. That score was eventually taken into the second half.
- The second half was a defensive battle back and forth. A pair of punts kicked off the second half and after a few plays on offense for the Red Hawks, a fumble stalled their scoring opportunity and kept the game at a 14-7 score.
- The Kean offense was not able to generate much of anything in the second half, but their defense continued to hold off any Montclair attempt forcing two punts, a fumble and a turnover on downs heading into Montclair State's final offensive drive.
- With 1:38 left to go in the game, the Red Hawks had to drive almost the length of the field to survive when they started at their own five-yard line. They were given a lot of breathing room when McLaughlin hit Hamilton for a 31 completion along the left sideline to get the ball to the MSU 36. McLaughlin got the ball into Kean territory on a 19-yard scramble and was followed by a 34-yard dart to Roige, who scratched and clawed his way down to the five-yard line. Roige got his number called again on a quick out that he turned up and dove for a pylon to get the score that the Red Hawks needed.
- Only an extra point away from tying the game and potentially sending it to overtime, those chances were erased when Kean blocked the extra point and returned it all the way for a successful two-point conversion and snagged a 16-13 lead. The Red Hawks tried an onside kick to try and get the ball back, but were unsuccessful and the Cougars succeeded on their conference road trip.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
- Roige continues to be one of the most reliable weapons of this Montclair offense, snagging eight catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. His eight receptions matched his season-high that he set last week at TCNJ
- JALIL TERRELL was in lockdown mode today at the cornerback position, snagging five pass break ups to go along with four total tackles (three solo).
- NICHOLAS BURGESS once again led the way in tackles with another double-digit mark of 11. Burgess has put together 15 double-digit tackle efforts in his career after today's game.
FROM THE FIELD
"We made a lot of mistakes which ultimately cost us the game. Last week we had too many penalties, this week we had too many turnovers. We need to focus on cleaning up these mistakes to give ourselves a chance moving forward." - Head Coach Mike Palazzo
