Women's Soccer Blanks Rutgers-Newark, 3-0

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University women's soccer team blanked Rutgers-Newark 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (5-4-5, 2-1-1 NJAC) opened the game with two shots in the opening five minutes, and had their first attempt on goal saved in the 14th minute, as MACKENZIE ALBERT placed a shot towards the bottom right of the net.
  • Montclair broke the scoring open in the 34th minute, as MACKENZIE MORANO slotted a long pass down the near sideline into the corner for MADELINE LESICA. The sophomore chased it down and sent in a curling cross that found Albert, who settled the ball and ripped a right-footed shot into the net.
  • After a save from SALANGE BELL in the early stages of the second half, the Red Hawks doubled their advantage in the 60th minute. SHANNON MULLINS saw a shot attempt from outside the box take a deflection off a Rutgers-Newark defender, and the ball pinballed around and found the feet of AILEEN CAHILL. The midfielder surged ahead with an open look and slotted a shot past the goalkeeper.
  • The Scarlet Raiders put together two strong chances later on in the half to try and cut into the deficit. A long, leading pass from the defensive side of midfield found a Rutgers-Newark attacker making a run at goal. Bell came off her line and made a sliding kick save to prevent the opportunity with nine minutes remaining.
  • Rutgers-Newark sent a turnaround shot off a cross towards goal three minutes later, but Bell parried the shot over the top of the crossbar to maintain the shutout. Montclair added a third goal in the 88th minute, as ARIA HICKS sent a header past the goalkeeper off a corner kick from SOPHIA GAMBUTI.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Montclair outshot Rutgers-Newark 16-9 on the day and held a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.
