New York, NY – The Montclair State University volleyball team (12-6) went on the road and earned a straight set win at Baruch (7-7), 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A kill from RACHEL CURRAN and two service aces by EMILY CARCICH helped the Red Hawks jump to a 3-0 lead in set one, but three attack errors in a row gave Baruch three points and tied the set right back up at three apiece. It was back-and-forth from that point on with Montclair gaining a slight edge up to a 14-11 lead before they went on a 5-1 run for a 19-12 advantage. That run was sparked by two kills from CAMRYN MUUSS, two kills from SARAH CAPONE and a service ace from KATIE RODMAN. The Bearcats fought back with three unanswered points before SOPHIA LOPEZ halted that run with a kill. Montclair eventually took a 22-18 lead the distance with a kill from LILY THOMAS, a service ace from Curran and a kill from Capone to take set one 25-18.
- Montclair jumped out to a 3-1 lead in set two before Baruch notched five points in a row to take a 6-3 lead. After the two teams exchanged points up to an 8-7 Bearcats edge, The Red Hawks flipped the script with a 9-1 run that gave them a 16-9 lead. That run was led by SOFIA DIPROFIO who hammered down four kills. The set eventually came to a 20-12 Montclair lead where Baruch tried to generate a deep run with four-straight points, but was answered with five-straight points from Montclair to close out set two, 25-16. That last run saw kills from Muuss, EMILY FERRI, KASEY TRZASKA and a service ace from BRYN BAUTISTA.
- The Red Hawks had the early advantage when they pushed out to a 6-3 lead. The early scoring saw two service aces from Rodman and kills from Capone, Thomas and Ferri. After a pair of points from the Bearcats, the two teams exchanged runs. Three service aces from GABBY KONRAD and a setting error notched four unanswered points for Montclair. That run was answered by a trio of points from Baruch and then a 6-1 run gave Montclair a 16-9 lead. Trzaska notched three service aces during that run. Baruch went on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 17-15, but was halted by a pair of attack errors that gave the Red Hawks a 19-15 edge. Three straight points by Baruch cut the lead to one at 19-18, but Montclair finished off the straight-set victory with a 6-1 run to notch a 25-19 set-three victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
- Curran led the way with seven total kills on the day, followed by six from Capone and five from DiProfio, which was a season and career-high for her.
- As a team, the Red Hawks compiled 15 service aces which was a season-high as a team. That effort was led by Rodman who served four of them
- Carcich and Konrad each had double-digit assists today. Carcich posted 25 while Konrad notched 10.
