Field Hockey Edges Union, 1-0, to Earn 10th Home Victory of Season

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University field hockey team edged Union 1-0 in its nonconference finale on Wednesday evening to claim its third consecutive victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (13-4) opened the contest with a shot on goal that had to be parried away by the goalkeeper 27 seconds in. Union answered with a shot on goal in the eighth minute, but SYDNEY WHITE collected her first save of the night to keep the game level. The visitors tallied the period's final shot in the waning moments, but it was blocked by the Red Hawks, with both sides scoreless after one.
  • Montclair started the second stanza with an offensive barrage, as KYLIE COMPTON and KELLY WESTERVELT each saw shots on goal saved by the Garnet Chargers in the first five minutes. The Red Hawks only allowed one shot the entire frame, as the two sides couldn't find the breakthrough goal and went into the halftime break level.
  • After JOEY MAYER saw a shot attempt saved in the third minute of the second half, SADIE EICHLIN stepped up and converted a penalty stroke to give the Red Hawks the advantage. Montclair pushed to double the lead, as GAB MAISTO had a shot saved by the keeper, and Eichlin had an attempt stopped by a defensive save and another parried by Union's goalkeeper. The home side did not allow a shot the entire quarter and took the one-goal lead into the fourth.
  • Mayer tallied two more shots on goal in the early minutes of the fourth, with SAMI BLOOM adding an attempt as Montclair continued to search for their second goal. White came up with a save with six minutes remaining to maintain the margin, as the Red Hawks closed out the game to conclude their nonconference schedule with a win.
