Football Falls Short at TCNJ, 20-13

Montclair, NJ– After a slow start, Montclair State football team (2-2, 0-1 NJAC) tried to put together a fourth-quarter rally that ultimately fell short as they were defeated at the College of New Jersey, 20-13 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Red Hawks started with the football in the first half at the MSU 23 and was looking to get something going after converting a third and seven on their first possession when AIDAN MCLAUGHLIN used his legs to move the chains, but the drive stalled after that and Montclair was forced to punt.
  • TCNJ started with the ball and while it looked like the defense had made the stops that they need to get them off the field, a few penalties hurt Montclair and allowed the College of New Jersey to march down the field and eventually score on a one-yard run to take a 7-0 lead at the 10:54 mark in the first quarter.
  • Montclair was once again unable to spark a drive and they punted the ball back to TCNJ, who started at their own 45-yard line and put themselves into field goal range to hit a 30-yard field goal for a two-possession lead of 10-0.
  • Both teams exchanged punts and it was now Montclair who started at their own 36. After two incompletions, McLaughlin found ANTHONY ROIGE for a 21-yard strike to keep the drive going on third and 10. A personal foul on the end of that play also tacked on an extra 15 yards and set the Red Hawks up with a first and 10 at the TCNJ 21. A seven-yard scamper from McLaughlin and a completion to REILLY NELSON set Montclair up first and goal at the eight, but suffered two negative plays when CHRISTOPHER ARNOLD lost five on a carry and McLaughlin was sacked. The Red Hawks eventually had to settle for three points, but GREG CASIMIR got MSU on the board with a 38-yard field goal to cut the lead to 10-3 with 8:19 left in the first half. No team was able to get any more points on the board before halftime and the score remained the same heading into the second half.
  • Both teams were forced to punt on their first drives of the third quarter. The Lions started their second drive inside of Red Hawk territory, but on third down threw an interception to UMAR DAVIS and gave them the ball back at the MSU 40.
  • The Red Hawks were putting together a decent drive until a holding call backed them into a third and 21 at their own 41. McLaughlin almost got it all back on a 20-yard completion to Roige, but faced fourth and one at the TCNJ 39. They went for it and got the yard they needed from JIMMY PEPE, but he was stripped of the ball on the run and the Lions recovered to answer the Davis interception.
  • Montclair forced a turnover on downs on the next drive, but were forced to punt on offense again. TCNJ only needed three plays to score when a deep pass turned into a touchdown reception of 65 yards and gave the Lions a comfortable 17-3 lead.
  • Montclair was putting together a really nice drive and saw big plays from MAKAI MICKENS, who registered a completion of 17 yards, Pepe who broke free for a 17-yard run and Roige who moved the chains on a third and nine with a gain of 13 on a completion. The drive ended though when McLaughlin threw a pick on the TCNJ 12-yard line. The Lions followed that up with a 10-play, 66-yard drive that set them up with another three points on a field goal and a lead of 20-3
  • The Red Hawks finally got the touchdown drive they wanted at the 9:32 mark in the fourth quarter. They faced fourth down twice and converted thanks to completions to Arnold. Montclair eventually got down to the TCNJ 38 and a deep throw to ALEX DIMAULO was caught for their first touchdown of the day and narrowed the gap to 20-10.
  • TCNJ got the ball back at the 2:34 mark at the MSU 48 and gave it right back to Montclair on a fumble that was forced by Davis and was recovered by DANIEL O'SULLIVAN to breathe life into the Red Hawks chances. They drove down to the TCNJ four-yard line and settled for another Casimir field goal, but were only a possession away from tying with a score of 20-13.
  • The onside kick attempt was not successful for the Red Hawks and the Lions were able to run out the rest of the clock and halt the Montclair rally
