Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State University women's soccer team was edged by #10 The College of New Jersey, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Hawks (3-4-5, 1-1-1 NJAC) fell behind early, as the Lions broke the scoring open in the third minute on a right-footed strike from 35 yards out that snuck in the top shelf of the net.
- Montclair responded with three shots over the next seven minutes, as AILEEN CAHILL had an attempt blocked before SAMIRA LUKOVIC saw a header ring off the crossbar. Lukovic added another attempt within 30 seconds, but the Lions stood tall to maintain the advantage.
- SALANGE BELL gathered three saves over the remainder of the opening stanza as the Lions looked to double their advantage. GIANNA CURCI notched a shot on goal late in the frame, but TCNJ went into the break up one.
- Bell notched three more saves within the opening 10 minutes of the second half, but the Lions broke through for a second time in the 65th minute. TCNJ wove down the far sideline and sent in a right-footed centering cross that was immediately volleyed into the top portion of the net.
- Montclair answered 37 seconds later and bounced back right off the restart, forcing a throw-in deep in TCNJ territory after MACKENZIE MORANO found Curci near goal. On the resulting throw-in, KYLIE PRENDERGAST chipped a ball from the far side right in front of the net, where Cahill immediately flicked a header past the keeper.
- Bell collected another save in the 79th minute to keep the margin at one, but the Red Hawks could not find the equalizer as TCNJ sealed the victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
- Cahill's goal was her team-leading fourth of the campaign and 41st of her collegiate career. Prendergast's assist marked her first of the season and 15th of her career.
- Bell tallied eight saves in net for the Red Hawks, matching her career-high set in her collegiate debut on August 30 against Swarthmore.
FROM THE FIELD
