#10 Men's Soccer Wins Ninth-Straight; Blanks Alvernia 2-0

Reading, PA The #10 Montclair State University men's soccer team blanked Alvernia, 2-0, on Wednesday night to increase their unbeaten streak to 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (8-2-1) broke the scoring open two minutes in on the game's first shot. REED KARSEN sent a throw-in from the near side to OSBIN MENDEZ, positioned with a defender to his back at the edge of the box. Mendez settled the ball, turned and clipped a centering cross that found the foot of OWEN MURPHY, who one-timed it past the Alvernia goalkeeper while making a run towards goal.
  • Alvernia searched for the equalizer shortly after, sending two shots on goal within a six-second span, but ALEXANDER VELASQUEZ notched back-to-back saves. The Montclair goalkeeper notched two more stops over the remainder of the opening 30 minutes to keep the Red Hawks in the lead.
  • Shortly after, Montclair looked to double the advantage as ALFREDO ROJAS and MAX PERRY each took a shot on goal, but the home side came up with a stop each time. Neither side could find the back of the net the remainder of the half, as the visitors went into the break up one.
  • Montclair opened the second frame with four of the first five shots, including a pair from SALEM ELLISY. Following a foul in the box, SAMUEL EPITIME stepped up and converted a penalty kick in the 57th minute to double the advantage for the visitors.
  • Velasquez came up with another stop in the 70th minute to keep the home side off the scoresheet. Montclair did not allow another shot until the final two minutes of the game, and sealed their ninth consecutive victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Murphy's goal was his first of the season and 10th of his collegiate career. Mendez notched his team-leading sixth assist on the goal and has recorded a goal contribution in five consecutive contests.
  • Epitime tallied his team-leading seventh goal of the season. He has scored in back-to-back contests, recorded a goal contribution in three-straight, and is a perfect three-for-three from the penalty spot.
  • Velasquez accumulated a career-high six saves en route to his seventh shutout of the campaign. He has allowed only one goal over his last 855 minutes of play.
  • Montclair held an 18-11 advantage in shots, including a slim 8-6 margin with shots on goal.
