Cahill's Overtime Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Over Kean in NJAC Tournament Quarterfinals

Montclair, NJ – The third-seeded Montclair State University women's soccer team took down the sixth-seeded Kean, 1-0, in the Quarterfinals of the 2024 New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (10-5-5) started the game on the front foot as they tallied three shots in the opening 12 minutes. They notched the first attempt on goal for either side in the 24th minute, as TATYANNE SCHIVEL saw her shot get saved in the bottom center of goal.
  • Three minutes later, KYLIE PRENDERGAST attempted to slot a low shot towards the bottom left of the frame, but it was gathered by the Kean goalkeeper. NICOLE RICCI saw an attempt saved in the 34th minute, and the Cougars answered immediately with a shot on goal of their own a minute later that was gathered by SALANGE BELL
  • 50 seconds later, AILEEN CAHILL narrowly missed the game's opening marker, as her shot rocked the crossbar. NIKI DANZ notched a shot in the 38th minute and initially found the back of the net, but the play was called back for a foul, leaving the two sides level at zero at the halftime break.
  • Montclair began the second half with five of the first six shots over the opening 15 minutes, capped off by another attempt on goal from Schivel. 10 minutes later, SAMIRA LUKOVIC tried to flick a shot on goal that had to be saved by Kean. Both defenses tightened up, as they allowed only one combined shot on goal the remainder of the frame to force overtime.
  • Halfway through the first overtime period, Bell collected a key save towards the bottom left of goal, and the Red Hawks answered with five consecutive shots over the next four minutes. MADELINE LESICA saw a header blocked as she tried to redirect a corner kick in the box, and after EMMI DENOVELLIS saw her resulting attempt blocked, Cahill capitalized on a loose ball and sent a left-footed shot into the far corner of the net to seal the victory in the 99th minute.
