Glassboro, NJ. – It took two overtime periods to find a winner, but it was the third-seeded Montclair State Women's Soccer team (11-5-5) that prevailed when senior
NIKI DANZ fired in the game-winner to send the Red Hawks to the NJAC Finals over second-seeded Rowan (13-2-2), 2-1 on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Danz created the first shot opportunity of day in the first two minutes of play, but the shot went out left. After that, it was the Profs who saw most of the action in the first 17 minutes of the opening half. They compiled four shots early with two of them landing on goal, but were denied both times by goalkeeper SALANGE BELL. It was a defensive battle towards the middle of the first half with no team able to generate much of anything until AILEEN CAHILL fired a shot over the top in the 33rd minute that was followed DANIELLE MULLINS, who did the same in the 38th minute. The Profs got themselves on the board first with a goal from Lianna SanFelice, who shot from side of box, through player screen at the 40:36 timestamp to give the Profs a 1-0 lead that extended into the second half.
- The Red Hawks played catch up in the second half and put the pressure on the Profs defense. JULIE BAKER, Danz, and TARA LAMBERT all generated opportunities, but were unable to deliver the equalizer in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Both teams went back-and-forth with Montclair trying to tie it and Rowan trying to build a comfortable lead, but no one was able to net. Just as time was starting to really become a problem for Montclair, TATYANNE SCHIVEL crossed a pass from the end line into the box and Cahill connected on a header that found its way home to tie the contest up, 1-1 in 87th minute that eventually forced overtime.
- The first overtime did not see much action as only three shots registered between both teams. Rowan saw two golden opportunities off a corner in the 95th minute but both shots were stuffed by Bell, who made the crucial saves. Cahill registered the lone shot for the Red Hawks in the 98th minute but the shot was off and the game went into the final overtime period.
- MADELINE LESICA had the first opportunity of the second overtime period when she fired a shot on goal that was denied by Rowan goalkeeper. The game-winner came in the 105th minute of the contest when Cahill pushed a ball up to Danz, who outraced the defender and placed the ball towards the opposite post to send Montclair to the NJAC Finals
