Peralta Wins NJAC Championship In 50-Freestyle

College Park, Md. – Sophomore ROURKE PERALTA of the Montclair State University women's swimming & diving team claimed the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship in the 50-freestyle during the second day of the NJAC Championships on Friday.
 
Through two days of competition, the Red Hawks sit second with 317 points. They trail only the University of Mary Washington, who have 393 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Peralta made it back-to-back conference championships as she re-broke her school record during the finals. After swimming 23.64 in the preliminaries and missing the school record by .01, the sophomore clipped her previous best by .01 and touched the wall in 23.62. She was the only swimmer with a sub-24 second time, winning by .72 seconds.
  • The Red Hawks set a school record in a relay for the second consecutive day. The foursome of SOPHIA SHOPOVICK, ABBY BROCK, MADELINE ROGERS, and Peralta placed third in the 400-medley relay, turning in a time of 3:55.87. They broke the record held by Erin Cannon, Claire Luigard, Margaux Winchock, and Madison Franke of 3:56.33.
  • JULIE TIEDEMANN also nabbed a podium finish, placing third in the 500-freestyle. The junior notched a mark of 5:11.7, dropping over a second of her preliminary round time.
  • The Red Hawks had four swimmers qualify for the finals in the 200-IM. MARIANNE TASSINARI led the way with a seventh-place time of 2:11.05, with LILI SHAY (2:12.15), CATTY GEYER (2:13.76), and ABBY PANZARELLA (2:14.14) competing in the "B" finals.
  • JULIANA SKOPP-CARDILLO joined Peralta in the "A" finals of the 50-free, placing sixth in 24.73. Brock won the "B" final with a time of 24.73, while MADDY WISHNOW swam 25.6 in the "C" final.
  • KACIE GADZINSKI narrowly missed making the finals in the 500-free, clocking in at 5:26.03, while Rogers tallied a mark of 25.6 in the 50-free.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks resume the NJAC Championships tomorrow morning, with the meet beginning at 10:30 am for preliminaries and 6:30 pm for the finals. Please note that the start times for each have been pushed back an hour due to impending bad weather.
