Baseball Takes Down St. Joseph's-Long Island, 9-1

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University baseball team took down St. Joseph's-Long Island 9-1 in their home opener on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Eagles tallied the afternoon's first run, pushing a run across on a single and three walks in the first. MATTHEW TIPLADY, who entered in relief, induced a 1-2-3 double play to aid in getting out of the jam. The Red Hawks threatened in the home half of the frame, putting runners on second and third after a MARCUS JOHNSON hit by pitch and a RYAN MCKENNA double.
  • They could not get a run across before Tiplady got another double-play to escape the second. Montclair evened things in the second as a REECE MALEK double brought home JASON MOORE, who reached on a one-out single.
  • The Red Hawks tacked on four tallies in the third, as MATT SHUHET brought a runner home on a fielder's choice, and Malek dropped a run-scoring single to right field. An additional run crossed the plate on an error and wild pitch.
  • Montclair added to their advantage in the sixth. Johnson led off with a double to right before SAM ANGELO cranked a home run with right-center field, clearing the 363-foot sign. JOE GISONDA brought home another run courtesy of a sacrifice fly, which scored Shuhet.
  • The Red Hawks polished off their scoring in the eighth, as MILES FEASTER hit a homer down the left field line that just went over the 308-foot marker in left.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Tiplady scattered just two hits over seven innings of relief. The seven innings marked the longest outing of his career, surpassing his 6 1/3 inning start against Rutgers-Camden last season.
  • CHRISTIAN ADDOTTA made his collegiate debut, tossing two scoreless innings.
  • Angelo, McKenna, and Malek each collected two hits.
  • Angelo, Gisonda, and Malek knocked in two runs apiece.
FROM THE FIELD
"What (Matthew) Tiplady did today was special and we needed it to allow our offense to get us in that game early. 7 doubles and one strikeout as a team is a good day. Good win against a strong program." Head Coach Dave Lorber.
