Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University baseball team split a doubleheader with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.
The Red Hawks (14-3) claimed the second game 9-6 after falling in game one 9-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Engineers struck early in game one, plating two runs in the first inning and adding another in both the second and third innings to build a 4-0 advantage through a third of the game. MIT drove in two more in the fourth on a home run to expand the lead.
- MATT KALISKE got Montclair on the board in the bottom of the frame, as he singled through the right side to bring in MARCUS JOHNSON. MILES FEASTER's sacrifice fly made it 6-2, but the Engineers used an RBI single in the sixth to bring the lead back to five.
- JASON MOORE reached on a fielder's choice that same inning to bring home a run, but MIT answered once again with two in the ninth on a double to make the deficit six for the Red Hawks. SAM ANGELO homered in the ninth, but the Engineers were able to seal the victory in the first portion of the twinbill.
- MICHAEL TIMBERLAKE started game two strong, striking out two in the first inning en route to six shutout frames. Moore broke the scoring open in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, and JOE GISONDA singled to center field to drive in two runs the following inning to make the score 3-0.
- The Red Hawks expanded their lead in the seventh, bringing home six runs. ZACH STEARNS brought in two on a double, and Feaster singled later in the inning to drive in Stearns. Four consecutive hit batters plated two more runs, and Gisonda came home on a wild pitch to make the score 9-0 going into the eighth.
- MIT answered with five runs in the following frame and tacked on a sixth in the top of the ninth, but MICHAEL TODARO was able to shut the door to clinch game two for the Red Hawks.
