SAGE RIZZI of the Montclair State University softball team tossed a no-hitter to help the team split a doubleheader with Saint Elizabeth University on Friday.
Rizzi's no-no in the second game was the 42
nd in program history as the Red Hawks (7-7) topped the Eagles 9-0 in five innings. Montclair was clipped 6-5 in the opening game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles opened the first game by scoring three times in the top of the first. The Red Hawks dug into the lead in the home half, as RILEIGH GLYNN scored on a STEPHANIE SERETIS sacrifice fly. Glynn led with a single moved up on a stolen base and wild pitch.
- Saint Elizabeth tacked a run on in the third before Montclair chipped away in the third. Glynn reached on a one out single and came home on an RBI triple from KAYLA COSENTINO. Montclair got within one in the fifth, as Glynn scored as Seretis' fly ball to center was dropped.
- The Eagles tallied three runs in the sixth, opening a 6-3 advantage. The Red Hawks put runners on the corners with two down, but failed to capitalize.
- Cosentino led off the seventh with error and scored on a double to left from Seretis. KATIE BRUNNER was up next and deposited a double to left, plating Seretis. After moving to third on a wild pitch, DYLAN BOLES reached on a fielder's choice as Brunner was tagged out at home. A walk put the tying run at second, but a pop-up ended game one.
- The Eagles put two runners on in the top of the first of game two on a walk and error, but Rizzi ended the stanza with a comebacker. Seretis continued her hot start, bringing Glynn home in the bottom of the first to give Montclair a 1-0 lead.
- The Red Hawks broke the game open with a three-spot in the second. JULIANA CASILLAS led off with a single and came around on a double from LIZ MULLEN. MADISON LEECH singled and stole second, putting runners on second and third. Cosentino stepped in and singled to center, allowing Mullen and Leech to score.
- Rizzi escaped a first and second, no out jam in the fourth by getting a pop out and two strikeouts to keep the Eagles hitless. Montclair capped off their scoring with five runs in the fourth. Cosentino, Casillas, and CHLOE SAPERSTEIN had RBI hits, with Cosentino and ALYSSA SANTIAGO scoring on double steals.
- The Eagles went 1-2-3 in the fifth, cementing the no-hitter for Rizzi.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rizzi's no-hitter was the first since ALI CAVALLARO tossed one against Gwynedd Mercy on March 7, 2022. The junior allowed two walks and struck out five while throwing all five innings.
- Glynn went 3-for-4 in the opener, scoring three runs and swiping two bases.
- Seretis drove in four runs total, including three in the opener.
- All nine starters had a hit in game two, including three from Cosentino.
