Baseball Surges Past DeSales

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team surged past DeSales University 14-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After retiring the side in order to start the contest, the Red Hawks (17-3) took the lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run to left field from SAM ANGELO. With two runners in scoring position and one out, MATT SHUHET came home on a wild pitch to make the margin three.
  • The Bulldogs plated their first run of the game in the second and took their only lead of the day in the third on a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run. Montclair quickly leveled in the bottom portion of the stanza on an RBI single from MATT KALISKE, and later reclaimed the lead as MARCUS JOHNSON scored on a groundout.
  • Montclair broke the game open in the fourth, as Angelo doubled to center field to plate two runs. Two batters later, Shuhet reached on a dropped fly, scoring Angelo. With runners on first and second, JASON MOORE singled through the left side to score Shuhet. During the next at-bat, a wild pitch brought home Montclair's 10th run of the day.
  • MATTHEW TIPLADY sent the Bulldogs down in order in the top of the fifth, and the Red Hawks tacked on another run as Johnson singled to left field in the Montclair half of the inning.
  • DeSales scored a run in each of the next two frames to the margin five tallies. In the bottom of the eighth, the Red Hawks plated a run on a bases loaded walk, and later added two more on a sacrifice fly from Feaster and an error by the DeSales first baseman to make the final margin eight.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Angelo finished with a game-high four hits and four RBI. He extended his on-base streak to 45 consecutive games dating back to March 24, 2023.
  • Kaliske tallied three hits on the day and has collected 10 over his last four games.
  • Tiplady earned the victory, throwing four innings of relief and striking out three.
  • The Red Hawks have plated 10 or more runs in eight games this season.
  • Montclair is 53-11 at Yogi Berra Stadium since the 2020 season. They have outscored opponents 97-59 at home during the 2024 campaign.
  • The victory marked the 10th at home this season for the Red Hawks, marking the fourth-straight year Montclair has won double-digit games at home.

The Red Hawks will open New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 30, as they travel to face Ramapo College in a doubleheader. First pitch from Mahwah, NJ is scheduled for 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM.
