Softball Notches Split With Drew

Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State University softball team split a doubleheader with Drew University on Tuesday.

The Red Hawks (10-8) fell 11-0 in the opening game before knocking off the Rangers 5-3 in game two.


HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rangers opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, sending the game's first pitch over the left field wall. They added a second run in the first before tacking on five in the second, including a three-run home run.
  • Drew added four more tallies in the third before the Red Hawks threatened in the fourth. STEPHANIE SERETIS and KATIE BRUNNER reached on errors, and MOLLY COLLIGAN walked to load the bases. They were unable to capitalize as the next two hitters were retired.
  • Montclair got off to an early start in game two, scoring three in the first. RILEIGH GLYNN led off with a single and stole second before scoring on a double by KAYLA COSENTINO
  • A single from KATIE BRUNNER and an error loaded the bases with MOLLY COLLIGAN driving in a run with a fly out. CHLOE SAPERSTEIN polished off the inning with an RBI on a fielder's choice.
  • The Rangers answered with single runs in the second and third, trimming the deficit to 3-2. Drew threatened in the sixth, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Colligan fielded a ground ball and stepped on third, ending the frame without surrendering a run.
  • Montclair added to their lead in the sixth. Glynn singled with one out and moved to third on a single from Cosentino. Brunner dropped a single down the right field line to score Glynn before a sacrifice fly from JULIANA CASILLAS scored Cosentino.
  • Drew got within two on a single with no outs in the seventh, but SAGE RIZZI retired the next three hitters to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • LIZ MULLEN and DYLAN BOLES collected hits in game one, with Mullen notching a double to left field.
  • Glynn and Cosentino had three hits a piece at the top of the lineup, with Glynn stealing three bases.
  • Rizzi went the distance in the second game, striking out six while giving up three runs.

The Red Hawks open NJAC play on Saturday, visiting Stockton University in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
