Montclair, NJ – Behind a walk-off double from
SAM ANGELO, the Montclair State University baseball team edged Stevens 3-2 in a 12-inning thriller on Monday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Hawks (19-4) fell behind in the second inning, as the Ducks plated a run on a sacrifice fly following a throwing error. Montclair threatened in the bottom of the stanza with runners on second and third, but Stevens escaped the jam with a two-out groundout.
- Stevens placed runners on first and third the following frame, but Ecker induced a flyout to end the inning. The freshman allowed only two baserunners over the next two frames and shut the door in the sixth, as the Ducks flied out to right field with two runners on.
- Angelo walked in the bottom of the sixth, and after he stole second, RYAN MCKENNA doubled to right field on a full count to level the contest. Montclair loaded the bases later in the inning but Stevens prevented more runs from coming across.
- JOE GISONDA singled to right field in the bottom of the ninth and advanced to second on a sacrifice from JASON MOORE. The Ducks intentionally walked MICHAEL MURPHY during the next at-bat, and turned a double play to send the game to extra-innings.
- After a two-out single in the top of the 11th, the Ducks advanced the runner to third on back-to-back steals and drove it in on a single to left field. Montclair answered, as MATT SHUHET hit a pinch-hit, two-out single to left center to drive in Gisonda from second to tie the contest.
- ZACH STEARNS walked to lead off the bottom of the 12th, and Angelo doubled to right center during the next at-bat to seal the victory for the Red Hawks.
