Softball Takes Game One Against Rutgers-Newark

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University softball team split a doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark on Sunday.

Montclair notched a 10-2 win in six innings in game one before falling 4-3 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks wasted no time, putting up three runs in the first inning. RILEIGH GLYNN was hit by a pitch to lead off the game before KAYLA COSENTINO singled. After a stolen base, STEPHANIE SERETIS brought Glynn home with a groundout. LIZ MULLEN tallied an RBI double, and JULIANA CASILLAS finished the scoring with a triple to right-center.
  • Montclair added four runs in the second, extending the lead to 7-0. NOELLE WOOD led off with a double and scored on a Cosentino single. An error put runners on first and second, and Seretis delivered a triple down the left-field line to plate both. After a pitching change, Mullen doubled Seretis home, making it 7-0.
  • The hosts added to their margin in the fourth, as MOLLY COLLIGAN singled and moved to second on an error. BECKY BLITZ pinch-hit and singled up the middle, scoring Colligan. Rutgers-Newark dug into the score, tallying single runs in the fourth and fifth.
  • ALYSSA SANTIAGO reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a stolen base. A MADISON LEECH single put runners on the corners. Leech swiped second, and when the throw sailed into center, Santiago scooted home.
  • The Red Hawks closed out game one in the sixth, as Seretis and Mullen singled to lead off the frame. KELSEY MCFADDEN pinch hit and dropped a single into left that scored Seretis, giving Montclair the 10-2 win.
  • Rutgers-Newark started the scoring in game two with a solo homer to left field. Montclair responded with three in the bottom of the third. Glynn reached on a bunt single and scored on a triple to right-center field. After an out, Mullen and Casillas tallied RBI extra-base hits to make it 3-1.
  • The Scarlet Raiders tied the game with two in the fifth and threatened to take the lead in the sixth. ALI CAVALLARO escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam with a pop-out to second. The guests took a 4-3 advantage in the seventh, with a single to right bringing in an unearned run.
  • Down to the final inning, Wood entered as a pinch runner with one out and stole second to move into scoring position. The Red Hawks could not bring her home, as a fly-out and groundout ended the game.
