Field Hockey Falls to #15 Cortland

Cortland, NY The Montclair State University field hockey team fell to #15 Cortland 3-1 on Friday afternoon to begin the 2024 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (0-1) received two key saves from MCKENNA LAMAN in the opening frame, as the two sides played to a scoreless quarter. Laman made two more stops early in the second stanza before Cortland opened the scoring in the 25th minute on a tap-in at the right post.
  • The Dragons struck in the opening five minutes of the second half on a breakaway to double their advantage. Montclair applied offensive pressure in the early stages of the fourth quarter, stringing together four shots on three consecutive penalty corners.
  • Cortland added to their lead in the 54th minute on a shot from the left side following a penalty corner. Montclair answered shortly after, as NATALIE SURMA redirected the ball in front of the net on a feed from GAB MAISTO. The Red Hawks could not inch any closer as the Dragons were able to close out the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The goal for Surma marked the second of her collegiate career, with Maisto's assist marking the 11th of her four year tenure.
  • Laman matched her career-high of seven saves in the contest, her highest total since September 30, 2023 against Messiah.
FROM THE FIELD

"Great battle to open the 2024 season. Cortland is a hard-nosed program and this game had the intensity of an NJAC match up. I'm proud of our group for going toe-to-toe with Cortland for 60 minutes. We move forward to our next game on Sunday knowing that we need to tighten up several defensive concepts and that we can generate scoring opportunities from a variety of threats. Hats off to a core group of freshmen who showed up in big ways in their first collegiate game: EMMA BIANCO, JOEY MAYER, BREANNA FABI, and BELLA HEISER. They are focused and working hard each day, and we are excited to see them continue to grow this season." - Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly
